2014-2015 Perfromance

I know its been awhile since the beginning of the year when people normally post their performances, but I got distracted and side tracked so here it goes.

Q1 2014: 5.51%

Q2 2014: -10.7%

Q3 2014: 11.06%

Q4 2014: 1.91%

total return 1.02%, the S&P 500 returned 11.74%

My two year average return is 11.75%(I did 42.57% last year)

My two year Sharpe ratio is .65, I based it off a 3 month treasury

Comments: I always try to get a solid return with my investments, but I also try to learn what I did right and wrong. A big lesson that I learned this year was to not argue with a stock too much. Most of why I was down in Q2 was because I held on to 75% of my $KORS position. They had reported stellar earnings in Q1 and that led to me having great gains, but they sold off from the all time high of $101.04 down to the high 70’s by the end of the summer. It continued to fall despite good earnings reports. and I watched it and my gains fall. I am still in the stock, but I have a harsher view. I got too wrapped up in the story and forgot to save my gains because I thought a turnaround would happen. In Q2 I received $10,000 into my brokerage account by my parents for my 18th birthday, at the time I had about $4,300 in the account. Most of Q2 and into Q3 was spent waiting for good opportunities to put that capital to work. Over the months I went from being over 60% in cash in July, to over 30% in cash into October. I’m grateful for not being fully invested at that time, because it provided a great opportunity to buy a lot of great companies at good prices. This has set me up to have a fantastic 2015, and I am already seeing the results. I learned a lot about portfolio management this last year and how to allocate large(large to me) amounts of money to talks and balance it out in a portfolio. I would also like to add that this past year I hedged my portfolio with the ETF $HDGE which is an active ETF that actively shorts the market, I like this because it allows me not to worry as much  during down trends like in October because I know I’m some what protected. Overall I think I had a good year, not performance wise, but I learned a lot and for my age that is what matters. I’m not running a a fund right now, although I would be up for that, so making mistakes as I progress will happen.
